How to Choose the Right AC Compressor for Your Car

Two cars with the same name can need different compressors. These are the details that decide which compressor fits your vehicle.

The details that decide the fit

  • Model, generation and registration year – compressors often change between generations and sometimes at a facelift.
  • Engine and fuel type – petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and electric versions can use different compressors.
  • Variant – manual AC and automatic climate control sometimes use different compressors.
  • Pulley groove count and diameter, and the clutch voltage (12V for most cars, 24V for most trucks and buses).
  • Mounting points, pipe connection positions and the electrical connector.
  • Refrigerant type – R134a or R1234yf – from the label under the bonnet.

Use the part number

The fastest way to find an exact match is the part number on the old compressor’s label, plus the compressor maker’s name (for example Denso, Sanden, Subros or Valeo). Take a clear photo of the label before the old unit is removed. If the label is unreadable, the chassis / VIN number from the RC book is the next best thing.

OEM or aftermarket?

A genuine OEM compressor matches the original exactly. A quality aftermarket compressor costs less and is popular for older vehicles – it just needs the pulley, clutch, mounting and connector checked against the original.

Order the related parts together

With a new compressor, workshops usually replace the receiver drier and expansion valve, fit new O-rings and use the correct compressor oil. Send your details on WhatsApp and Rameswar Cool Spares will confirm the compressor and the parts that go with it.
