The receiver drier stores liquid refrigerant and traps moisture and dirt before they can damage the compressor and expansion valve.
What the receiver drier / filter drier does
A desiccant bag inside the drier absorbs moisture that gets into the system, and a filter catches debris. On many newer cars the drier is built into the side of the condenser.
OEM or aftermarket?
Driers are low-cost and are normally replaced whenever the system is opened for repair or a new compressor is fitted.
Signs of a failing receiver drier / filter drier
- The system has been opened or left without gas for some time
- Frost on the drier body, showing a blockage inside
- Poor cooling after a compressor failure
- A rattle from inside the drier (burst desiccant bag)
