How to check your car
Every car with factory AC has a label under the bonnet โ usually on the bonnet itself or near the radiator โ that states the refrigerant type and the charge quantity in grams. The service ports are also different: R1234yf systems use different fittings from R134a, so the wrong gas cannot easily be connected.
What is the difference?
R134a has been the standard car refrigerant for decades. R1234yf was introduced because it has a far lower global-warming effect; it is classed as mildly flammable and works at slightly different pressures, so systems are designed specifically for it.
Why they are not interchangeable
- The two gases need different service equipment and fittings.
- Compressor oil must suit the refrigerant โ R1234yf systems need oil approved for R1234yf.
- Mixing gases contaminates the system and makes it hard to service later.
- Always charge the exact quantity on the label; overcharging is as bad as undercharging.
